Alberta Commercial Driver Practice Exam

The main purpose of activating sirens when driving an emergency vehicle is to notify other drivers of your presence. This is crucial for ensuring safety on the road, as emergency vehicles often need to navigate through traffic quickly to respond to emergencies. The sound of the siren serves as a warning signal, alerting other drivers that an emergency vehicle is approaching and that they should yield the right of way. By making other drivers aware of their presence, emergency vehicles can move more safely and efficiently, helping to expedite responses in critical situations.

While the use of sirens might have some secondary effects, such as prompting pedestrians to be more alert, the primary goal is to gain the attention of drivers on the road to ensure they clear a path. This is essential for maintaining an effective emergency response and minimizing the risk of collisions.
